Case of the Quarter: Hoax’s Second Chance

When our TNR team began working a community cat colony of more than 50 cats, we expected to spend our days trapping, spaying, and neutering. What we didn't expect was to find a tiny kitten named Hoax who couldn't keep up with the others.

We first noticed her limping around the colony, but it quickly became clear something was seriously wrong. She wasn't running from people like a typical community kitten, and after finding her soaked and exposed during a storm, we knew she needed more than a spay appointment—she needed help.

Once safely trapped, Hoax was rushed to the veterinarian, where we learned she had suffered severe trauma to both of her rear legs, along with an infection and fever. We don't know exactly what happened to her, but her injuries were consistent with being struck or crushed by something.

For weeks, we hoped one of her legs could be saved. While her right leg healed beautifully with treatment, her left continued to worsen despite every effort. Ultimately, the kindest decision was a rear leg amputation.

Today, Hoax is recovering beautifully. In fact, she's already proving that being a tripod doesn't stop a kitten from doing kitten things.

Like so many kittens, she hasn't let three legs slow her down. She's learning to hop, play, explore, and do all the things kittens are supposed to do. Most importantly, she's no longer living in pain.
